Ken's Mutton March '12

Fishing Report March '12

Boy i dont think we had a winter this year. It has been very mild with temperatures most days in the 80s. That does not seem to keep the fish from biting. For us we have been mostly working the reefs catching Yellowtail Snapper, Grouper, and King Mackerel. Our last trip produced Mutton Snapper which had not been on our radar for some time. Looks like they are starting to make a showing on the reefs and getting ready to span. Of course all groupers have to be released till May 1st when the season opens again. There is plenty of king mackerel while fishing the reef. There are many ways to target. Either with live or dead bait while anchored or slow trolling live or dead baits on downrigger or planers. Sailfish continue to be offshore with plenty of catches reported up and down inside 200 feet. Just look for a well defined edge and work the area. Prefered depths seem to be 130 feet. There is the occasional dolphin also being caught while sailfishing. We are anticipating a possible early run of dolphin this year since the weather never cooled down.

Typical Day Out

On a typical Full Day Charter i will usually meet you at Matheson Hammock Marina in Coral Gables or Bayfront Park Marina in Homestead between 0700 and 0730 AM. Basically the Captain is opened to your suggestions, although the Captain may suggest what species to target depending on reports and time of year. On the way out we will stop and fish for Live Bait. The boat is equipped with all the Tackle needed to fish. Of course you are welcomed to bring your own tackle. It is also recommended to bring Sunscreen to protect yourself from the brutal South Florida Sun. Bring a camera for that special moment of your catch and friends. We should arrive back at the Marina between 0400 and 0430 PM. We will gladly clean your catch at no extra cost.

Tristan with his first Porgy on January '12

BIO

Ever since his uncle took young Jose out to the Rickenbacker Causeway back in 1973 he knew he was hooked. Jose continued to fish the party boats such as the Seabreeze, and Reward out of Miamarina in Downtown Miami on a weekly basis where he continued to gain knowledge from Old Salts like Captain Alec and Freddie. Today this area is known as Bayside Market Place. Jose continued his passion on local commercial lobster boats as a deckhand during his young years but gained most of his angling experience from fishing local charters and party boats in the Key Largo and Islamorada area. In 2005 Captain J Lopez put his passion to work shortly after purchasing Gordy's Dusky and decided to show his passion for fishing to others. With over 25+ years of local knowledge Captain J Lopez strives to learn and give his anglers on board a memorable angling day to remember.
